Events Near the Vern: Rock Creek Park Nature Center and Planetarium

By: Kevin McDonald

As we roll into March, it is important to realize that this month is Women’s History Month. All over DC., different institutions are holding events and exhibitions dedicated to women and the advancements that they have made in a variety of different fields. One of the most unique events happening every Saturday is being held at the Rock Creek Park Nature Center and Planetarium. Only a short Uber ride away from the Mount Vernon campus, each Saturday at 4 the planetarium will be hosting an event called Astronomy Stars: Women Who Changed the Night. During this event, the planetarium will be highlighting the scientific achievements of a variety of female astronomers. The event aims to be particularly engaging and appropriate for all ages and¬†levels of academic study. If you have any interest in learning more about the ways that women have been crucial to the development of modern astronomy, then this event is not to be missed. In addition, since the planetarium is inside of Rock Creek Park, you should really take advantage of the other resources that the park has to offer. Rock Creek Park is one of the largest forested parks housed within DC’s city limits. It contains miles of walking and biking trails, which are absolutely perfect if you need a momentary escape from the noise and commotion of DC. It’s the perfect place to just relax, have a picnic with some friends, and admire nature without having to travel too far. If you have a free Saturday, I highly recommend that you make a day trip out of going to the park and attending the planetarium’s discussion about how women have contributed to the field of astronomy.
